Light

As the days are waning and the sunlight is less, I look for light.  That is what happens to those of us in the northern parts of the country.  The days become dark and dingy.  There may be sun during the day but it is fleeting.  The good news is that light is a major component of any holiday you may be celebrating this December.

While I do not profess to be all of these religions, I do know enough about the holidays that are upcoming to know that the common thread is LIGHT!

In Christianity, you have the star the magi followed to the birth of the baby Jesus.  That is light.  There are candles on Advent wreaths.  Again, that means light.

In Judaism, Hanukkah involves the lighting of candles over eight days.  This celebration is one of light as the oil that was found should not have burned the eight days.  Now, Jewish people will light a candle for each of these eight days.

Kwanzaa involves lighting of candles to celebrate seven principles.  There is light again.

So, as the days get shorter, light a candle or do a good deed and bring light to your life, your home, your community.

  1. Indeed it is a season of light. I love this time of year. The flickering trails of lights, the red Starbucks cups, the ubiquitous smell of pine. The metaphor of light is magical – that which illuminates our minds and our worlds, brings perspective and perspicacity, forces us to look away from the darker spots in life.

Do you think that in blogging we are in some way looking for light through little cracks in the walls of our worlds? Just a thought.

  2. I was just, JUST thinking about this today – the darkest season yet also replete with light, literal and metaphorical. Thank you. More food for thought.
