About Me

I frequently told people that I was a mother. Having raised six children, mother is probably the label that I associate with most closely. Unfortunately, while motherhood may last forever, the constant need for mothering does not and I have had to reinvent myself many times. With three married adult children and my “baby” out of the house and turning 22 this year, the time for raising children is over and the time for living a different life has come.

I love to write.  Unfortunately, I write about a lot of things most people could care less about so I am very appreciative of my readership.

I lived most of my life in upstate New York where I was raised and which I love.  I would never have thought I would live about 20 miles from where I grew up as a child but I did for 50 of the first 55 years of my life. I have written about going home again. I am definitely over being in NYS, though, and am starting a new journey in life by packing up my home of almost 20 years and moving, by myself, to an apartment in the mountains of Western NC.

By day, I “work” for myself doing freelance and contract work. After work is done, and sometimes when it gets too overwhelming, I run. I have run 7 full marathons, over 25 half marathons and countless other distances.

Any other time – day, afternoon, night, whenever I can get a free moment, I am an artist. My art has taken a back seat since running became a way to cope with life. It is in paper; my art is in mixed media; my art is in found items; my art is from behind a camera lens. I play!

  1. Nicki,

Don’t freak out, but it’s snowing all over your nickisnook site.

I just wanted to let you know. Turn the computer off before it melts into the MotherBoard. If it does, you’ll have a ‘Mother’ of an expensive repair…

How DO you make it ‘virtually snow’? That is TOO cool…

Happy New Year my blog friend,

    Mike

  2. Mike –

Unlike here in the Southern Tier, snow on my blog is a switch that wordpress provides. I can turn it off and on. LOL – oh to be able to do that in real life!

    Happy New Year!!

    Nicki

  3. Hi, Nicki:

I was so happy to see you, your family, and your mother yesterday at that heartfelt tribute to your father. An honor guard of firemen! What a testimony to his great work and good deeds.

You are as warm and welcoming in person as you were on the phone. I thank you.

Thank you, too, Nicki, for sending me the invitation to write to you through pressconnects, but I couldn’t figure it out. My e-mail address is: shellyreuben@aol.com My website is http://www.shellyreuben.com So let’s do it that way.

You aleady know my phone number, and I am here whenever you need me.

A hug and a kiss to you and your mother.

    Shelly

  4. Where do you find legitimate freelance work? I am having trouble finding anything I can do at home and still make a little extra money.

  5. Hi Lisette,

I have found work through a variety of locations. What type of freelancing do you do? I have writing gigs on Craig’s List. I belong to a web site called FreelanceMom.com, where there is a forum and occasional jobs posted.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  6. hello maam nickie, i like your blog:) its cool.. anyway i am just researching for something then i just dropped in this site:) I’ve read it, and its nice:) I am al anyway from Philippines 🙂 GBU

  7. Al – Thanks for stopping by. You can find art if you scroll down to the categories and click the art category. It has been a while since creation has happened but that will have to change soon. I need to make some time.

  8. Hi Gary – thanks for stopping by. I am hoping to get to your studio tomorrow with luck. It is stop number two on my plotted out trip.

  9. Thanks for your comment on my blog! I’m glad you enjoy the writing (and I look forward to reading yours, too!)

  10. Nicki –

Is your art posted somewhere? Would love to see. (And re some of the freelancing comments above, as a freelance writer as well, there are at least as many “scams” or writing that is for so little money it’s not worth the time. Occasionally there’s something on CraigsList, but these days, it seems pretty hard. Much worse than usual, which has been pretty tough for the years I’ve been doing it.)

  11. @Spinning Leese – Love reading your thoughts!

@BigLittleWolf – I do have an art category here on my blog. Oops, must have removed the categories. Just went back and put the categories up. There is an art category. A lot is photography.

  12. greetings & salutations Nicki. Dropped by to explore your words from tag surfing for poetry. Will bookmark and return when I can sit down long enough to actually read more than a post or two.

    1. Purple – Thanks for stopping by. I will actually be posting more poetry in the upcoming days as I have been writing a lot.

  13. Hi Nicki,
I randomly found your site because of a recycling blog you put on some time ago. I live in Saratoga County, NY and have one 2 year old son. Tribute to you for being a single mom of 6 children!!!! Unlike you, I’m not a big writer, but I have taken a liking to blogging. I think you have great blog topics. Did you mention that you’re a runner? My husband does triathlons. Looking forward to reading more of your work.
    Briana

    1. Hi Briana – Thanks for stopping by. I love to write – as you can probably guess. Yes, I am a runner. It is an identity I recently adopted. You can read about my upcoming year on my guest post at Motherese – http://mothereseblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/wont-you-be-my-neighbor-nicki.html

I have a friend who is going to do his first triathlon this year. He is also training for the Boston Marathon. He had a bad day today – http://jassnight.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/blood-on-the-sock

Will stop over at your blog. -Nicki

  14. Oh funny! I just found you because of your “Robin’s Nest” post (I too have a robin nesting on a ladder)… & creepily, I am also an artist & am really into running (3x a week, but new to it, only 2 yrs. now). I used to live in upstate NY (Syracuse for 10 yrs.) I think I’m on your cosmic channel?

Only part that doesn’t jive: I’ve never been a mother, let alone 6 times over. Yikes!

  15. Hi Nicki…nice to meet you….I live sandwiched between Syracuse and Oswego and during the summer we camp in Parish.

Nice to see other bloggers in the area…maybe one day we should do a local get together for bloggers.

I have several blogs, and honestly I haven’t been keeping up to well last few months- life taking over!

I also have a social networking site for bloggers…feel free to check it out and fill out a profile page…you could be our next featured member!
