Television Bonanza Tonight

I don’t watch a lot of television.  I do listen to a lot of it as I work and have the TV on in the background frequently as “white” noise.  Tonight, though, I am truly torn.

First off, I have been, since about midway through the first season, a huge Grey’s Anatomy fan.  I did try to watch the season premier last week.  It did not hold my attention.  I was asleep before it was over.

Next consideration for all you out there is that I am fanatical about my West Virginia University sports.  Living a little over an hour from Syracuse University, I do not get to see a lot of WVU sports on TV.  The Mountaineers are playing Colorado in Morgantown tonight and it is being televised on ESPN.

Third, I love Kate Walsh.  She is a wonderful actress.  She exudes sex appeal in almost any role she is in without trying.  She is also not a 20 year old, which is good in my book.  Consequently, I am rather hooked on Private Practice which has its season premier tonight.

Fourth consideration is Ken Burns.  He has this fantastic mini-series on our National Parks system that is airing this week on PBS.  The first run is from 8 to 10pm with a repeat from 10pm to midnight.  I totally missed the first installment on Monday but have watched, or listened to, the remaining installments.

So the big dilemma is … what am I going to watch tonight?  The DVR will only record so much.  Football is at the top of my list but then I would miss the others.  Oh dear!  I will be flipping channels like a madwoman tonight.

How do you describe yourself?

I know I saw this on a message board recently but cannot remember, for the life of me, where it was.  Anyway, the concept just crossed my mind again as I was introducing myself to a new working for the company I do contract work for.

When you meet someone new, how do you introduce, describe yourself?

Very few of the people I work with know I love art.  Even fewer know I create art.  I do occasionally call myself an artist but for some reason, not at work.

I am a single mom but even this is not cut and dry.  My ex – and I do call him that, even when he is around – is not legally my ex-husband.  We have been separated over ten years but neither of us has filed for a legal divorce.  Technically, we are still married but we both date other people and haven’t lived together since January of 1997.

I have two college degrees.  I have a forestry degree from Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smiths, NY and I have a  business degree with an emphasis in marketing from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV.  I don’t know that I officially identify with either alumni group.  I do know a few alums from both places and I answer positively when asked questions by prospective students to either university.

So how do you describe yourself?  Are you a gardener?  Are you a mother?  Are you a lover of a specific type of music?  Are you a sports fanatic?  Are you an artist?  Do you work at home?  Do you freelance?  Do you work in a corporate environment?

March Madness – For Real

I am not sure if I am referring to the suddenly, totally white ground outside or the NCAA college basketball tournament.  Actually, I live in upstate NY.  I know I am referring to the tournament.

I was excited as I drove home from the CHA Tournament last weekend and listened to the NCAA tournament selection show on the radio.  My initial shock wore off as I heard them name Cornell (the local team this year) a 14 seed as I was sure they were a 16 seed or the play-in game.  After all, their bid was an automatic one for winning the Ivy League, a league that doesn’t even have a championship tournament.  I was even more shocked to hear the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champs Siena were a 13 seed.  Last year when Niagara University won the MAAC, they were forced to the play-in game which I didn’t think then, and don’t think now, they deserved.

Through three regions, the radio reception was excellent.  I still hadn’t heard the name West Virginia said.  I realize they didn’t win the Big East tournament.  I also realized that a lot of Big East teams had already been called into The Dance.  I was sure, though, that West Virginia was also going to play.  Finally, I heard it but barely.  We had driven past reception for this small ESPN radio station and I was straining to hear that WVU was a seven seed – not great but not bad either.

Now day one is over!  I watched some fantastic college basketball yesterday and last night.  I watch a 15-seeded Belmont almost beat 2 seed Duke, a team that has never lost in the first round.  I watched a 14-seeded Cornell get walked on by 3-seeded Stanford, a team whose players admitted that Cornell would hands down beat them in the grades category.  I wanted to watch WVU and Arizona go at it for several reasons.  Instead, I watch Notre Dame beat up on George Mason.  I did think, though, if George Mason stood a chance, it was due to the pre-game pep talk the coach gave.  CBS broadcast it and it was magnificent.

I ended the day with 12 correct picks out of 14 on my bracket.  Day two cannot possible be as good!!

PS.  Should you want to enjoy a little extra-curricular bracket talk, check out Yahoo! Sports writer Dan Wetzel who blogs live from a sports bar during the games today, which you should be able to find here.
