Holy Hockey, Batman!

It has beautiful here in upstate NY this weekend so a lot of my NCAA path to the Frozen Four has been clips at the end of the night.  None the less, as I am watching the first weekend of the NCAA Division 1 Hockey Tournament, I am impressed by the number four seeds in two of the four regionals upsetting number one seeds last night.

I am just one year removed from having been at the Northeast Regional in Albany at the Times-Union Arena where my daughter’s university team played one of those number one seeds that was knocked off last night.

2008-03-16-15-46-52_0027Today, as I am getting ready for popcorn and beer during tonight’s Bemidji State versus Notre Dame game, I am looking at what is up with the soon-to-graduate Purple Eagles.

PurpleEagles.com shows that two of this year’s players are being reunited in Reading with a former teammate to play in the ECHL.  Go Rocco and Sullivan!

Niagara versus Michigan

If there is to be a Cinderella in a hockey tournament, it would be Niagara.  Of the 16 teams playing in the NCAA tournament this year, Niagara is seeded 15th.  They are up against the number one team in their region, a team that had only five losses all season and 32 victories.  Pretty daunting!

 Sea of Purple

A sea of purple showed up just about the time Niagara took the ice for warmups.  The fan bus and student bus from Niagara had left about 10 am Friday morning and didn’t come over to the Times-Union Center for the early game as there was a 5 pm Pep Rally at the Hilton Garden Inn, where the team and fans were staying.  While a great idea – a pep rally, that is, Elise and I were in town to see hockey so had skipped the pep rally to watch the early game.

Monty

The N-Zone gang even brought Monty, the Purple Eagle, with them.

The game was really intense.  Niagara was holding their own against a much larger and much faster team.  The big question, as the first period ended in a zero tie, I put to Elise was how long could they continue to hold their own.

 Pre Game Psych UP

Unfortunately, Niagara took some very unnecessary penalties at the end of the first period of play.  One of these carried over into period two and Michigan finally drew first blood by scoring.  It was like a different Niagara team, with the exception of Pags – the goaltender, had taken the ice at the beginning of period two.  Unfortunately, this team lost the game as there is only so far that good goal tending will take you.  When your team is held without a shot on goal for almost a whole period’s time, you are not going to go far.

The third period didn’t look much better, until Matt Carounas took the shut out away from Michigan with Niagara’s only goal of the game.  With 2:48 left to play and down by 3, Dave Burkholder, the Niagara head coach, tried his best to get his team closer.  He pulled Pags to give his team a scoring advantage, hopefully, by putting six skaters on the ice.  Unfortunately, this is not a great idea.  Niagara’s man up situation had not been all that effective all game so this was an issue.  Michigan scored its fifth and final goal into an empty net.

Road Trip Coming!!

My college-aged daughter and I are heading on a road trip.  Yes, the trip is set to satisfy both of our college hockey fanaticism.  We may even get some shopping in on Saturday.

Tomorrow morning, in what is suppose to be snow so very appropriate for hockey weather, my daughter and I will head to Albany for round one of the NCAA Hockey Tournament.  We are heading to the Times-Union Center in Albany for two games on Friday – #2 St Cloud State vs. #3 Clarkson and then, the reason for the trip, #4 Niagara vs. #1 Michigan.  The games are suppose to be broadcast on ESPNU so look for me if you get this channel.

I have many reasons to cheer on Niagara.  That is where my daughter attends college.  That is the team I am going to call “my” team this tournament.  But more importantly, I am always, first and foremost, a WVU Mountaineer and at this moment in time, we all still hate the University of Michigan.  We hate that their basketball coach is John Beilein, straight from the Mountainners.  We hate even more that their new football coach is none other than Rich Rodriguez.  Some things are not easily forgiven.

Elise attends Niagara University.  When she left for college three and a half years ago, she was not a big hockey fan.  She has become a huge hockey fan since living in the Greater Niagara Frontier.  We have seen two Niagara vs. Cornell games this year that were at Cornell during her between semester break.  At that time, I also went to one game in Niagara.

Two weeks ago, at the beginning of her spring break, I went to Niagara for the College Hockey American Tournament.  Niagara hosted this in “fan friendly” Dwyer Arena.  They also won the tournament, earning themselves an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The NCAA Hockey Tournament, unlike March Madness where 65 teams start, starts with sixteen teams.  There are four regional locations – Albany, NY; Worcester, Massachusetts; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Madison, Wisconsin.  We were going together if Niagara played in Albany or Worcester.  Elise was probably going if the team played in Madison.

Look for more details on the road tomorrow.

Road Trip!!!

While I am not sure I am happy about missing tonight’s Big East semi-final, I am really excited to be at Niagara University.  My oldest daughter goes to school here and we have tickets to the College Hockey America tournament right here on campus at Dwyer Arena.  Game one is tonight at 7 and two games tomorrow.   Final is Sunday!!

Go Purple Eagles!!  ( and my beloved Mountaineers down in Madison Square Garden)

The Out of WV Mountaineer Fan

I am, in case you haven’t surmised it yet, a WVU Mountaineer through and through.  I spent three years in Morgantown on the main and Evansdale campuses and love my college sports.  It doesn’t matter if the Mountaineers are winning or losing – although I admit, I prefer when they win – I watch and cheer them on.

Football is usually a pretty good season for me.  Even though I live in the heart of Big East country and less than an hour’s drive from Syracuse, I only get to see my Mountaineers play in person every other year when they visit the Carrier Dome.  I love this game, especially if both teams are having good years.  I also love seeing The Pride of West Virginia marching band when they get to come to NY with the team.  This is a band full or precision and 300 plus strong.

Basketball season is not usually so good for me.  If my local channels are playing college hoops, it is America East and the local university or it is Syracuse hoops.  I have had a huge surprise in the last four days.  Sunday, I was waiting for the Red Wings game to start at 3:30 pm when I found the West Virginia game on SNY.  I got to watch a very good game.  Last night, SNY had the WVU-Villanova game on.  Unfortunately, last night was worse than the Backyard Brawl from football season.  WVU lost by over 20 and was playing miserably.  But the good news is I got to watch!

Soon, the madness that is championship week and then selection show will begin.  I will be glued to college hoops like a true fan.  I am hoping to not only see my Mountaineers in the Big Dance but also my daughter’s team – the Purple Eagles of Niagara University.

Another Purple Eagle to NHL

I got a phone call, a totally unexpected one, from my 21 year old daughter last night.  I was in my room getting ready to settle in and wait for the new episode of “Brothers and Sisters” when she called.

She is currently a junior at Niagara University.  Until she left for college three years ago, she was not a huge hockey fan.  College has changed all that.  She loves Niagara Purple Eagles Hockey.  She loves college hockey.  She love Ottawa and Binghamton Senators hockey.

The reason she called was to let me know that Les Reaney had played his last game as a Purple Eagle.  He had signed a contract to play in the Edmonton Oilers farm system.  He is headed to Springfield, Massachusetts to play in the American Hockey League.

I have seen this year’s Purple Eagles men’s hockey team play three times in a week in January.  I like the way Reaney plays.  He is a big man, hard checking and good on his skates.  I am sure he will do well in the AHL and beyond.  The only shameful part of this is he didn’t finish college first.

Road Trip #2 for 2008

Purple Eagles’ tickets

Well, well, two weeks into the new year and two road trips have come and gone.

As noted previously, my 20 year old daughter attends Niagara University. Her twin brother attends the State University at Buffalo. He had to be back to school before her dorm opens for the new semester. She and I decided “road trip!”

We left home around 11 am yesterday, Jan 11th. By 2:30 pm, we had dropped Andy at UB and were on our way to see how many things we could do before our athletic destinations.

We made a stop at the campus store at Niagara. Books for the upcoming semester were purchased for under $100. There are two books still outstanding so another $75 or so and this will be a cheap book semester.

We made a visit to Campus Activities to visit friends of Lei’s. This is always a favorite stop of mine. I love the CAO staff!

Then, it was a sneak up into her room to leave the books. My suggestion if we could get in the dorm as it meant one less thing to forget to pack.

Then, off to shop. I had promised her a trip to Steve & Barry’s as we don’t have one near us at home. She got a new pair of jeans and new running shoes. I got her 13 year old brother a pair of jean as well as a pair for myself.

We had a quick dinner at Wendy’s before finding a parking place with our ultimate getaway from campus in mind – which would be at about 11:30 pm as we were staying for the 9 pm basketball game.

A very windy walk over to Dwyer Arena put us at our first athletic event – the Purple Eagles of Niagara against the Colonials of Robert Morris in men’s ice hockey. Having watched two Purple Eagles’ games last weekend, I have to say that last night’s was probably the best of the three. I don’t say this because the end result was a 7-2 win but because it was by far the most physical and well-skated of the three games.

After the seventh goal was scored, we headed over to the Gallagher Center to watch the basketball game – Niagara against Siena

The game was the third straight sell-out of the Gallagher Center. I got one of the last three tickets available. We couldn’t find seats but did find some of Lei and Michael’s friends in the student section. We stood the entire game. It was close but not close. It was college basketball at its best.

The end of the road trip was leaving Niagara at 11:30 pm and heading for the four hour ride home. Lei had had me drive up and do all our driving around so she could stomach the drive home. We made a quick stop at Pembroke Service area on the NYS Thruway and then one quick one at her oldest brother’s in East Syracuse. Lei and I were tucked tightly into bed by 4 am.

Live Blog – NCAA Tourney

Okay, so I am not “the man” in the bar watching four games at a time but it is almost time for the 7:10 pm tip offs and our favorite team is set to go…Go Purple Eagles!!

Unfortunately, I don’t have bar patrons to comment on but comment I will on the games. I am particularly looking at what game is going to be played and the fact that I have to watch Niagara on CBS’s Sportsline. At least I am watching.

Off to get a glass of merlot – I know, not a St Paddy’s drink or a sports fan drink but it is what is here and I am going to be back and blog about roundball.

7:05 pm – Got the game on the laptop. Got the glass of merlot. Am very annoyed by the fact that I am watching the lovely game on the small screen.

7:28 pm – Okay so watching the game on my daughter’s laptop didn’t pan out. Of course, my new Vista OS machine isn’t participating properly either. To this end, my older daughter has her laptop on the game. I have the tv on mute and the IL-VA Tech game on there and am listening to Niagara – Kansas. Did I ever tell you that I think they ought to retire Billy Packer? I have never heard such inane dribble in my life.

7:47 pm – Okay, this is not working too well. I have to get up from my warm recliner to get to the computer to type a blog entry. Niagara is doing all right but not good. IL and VA Tech is probably, much to the chagrin of my daughter who is home from Niagara on spring break, the better game. The first thing the Illinois-Virginia Tech game has going for it is that Billy Packer is in Chicago where Niagara is. The other is, at the moment I turned my back on the tv, it was a closer game. I would take my daughter – yes, she of spring break time – to a sports bar where we could watch both games but the roads are so bad here. We are in the middle of a winter storm.

8:05 pm – The local Niagara student is not happy. Somehow a slight lead for Kansas turned, in five minutes time, to a huge lead. Kansas by 25 at the half. Niagara came out good but seemed to lose its game somewhere. Hopefully, Joe will show all those AD’s at big name schools why he has a winning record at Niagara and why he is a top prospect for other head coaching jobs. Motivation!

8:40 pm – Okay, I am heading off the computer. Niagara is not playing their game. They will not pull it out. I am off to check my bracket. It was in good shape at the end of yesterday. Hopefully, it has survived today.

Thank you, U of Dayton

While the Niagara University Purple Eagle men’s basketball team was unhappy to be playing in the play-in game for the NCAA tournament, they did meet up with an unexpected acquaintance. The University of Dayton pep band – who had played for Niagara at NIT events at HSBC Arena several years ago – met up with NU fans in Miamisburg, Ohio and played for the team during the play-in game against Florida A&M on Tuesday.

The pep band from U of Dayton is also traveling with the Purple Eagles to Chicago for first round games. I am not sure how they are getting there but they will meet up with NU students who are being bussed from campus to the game also.

Go Purple Eagles! And, thank you to the pep band from the University of Dayton!!
