Social Media Inventory

I have to admit this was not a new thought.  Yesterday, I was reading Tim Nekritz’s blog, Inside Tim’s Head.  Tim was discussing the social media inventory of his employer, a state university in NY, and the uses of having said inventory written down.  I so wanted to put the phrase “down on paper” there but I do not know that this inventory will ever reach paper.

The advantages an institution of higher learning can glean from having a social media inventory are many.  In the particular case of SUNY-Oswego, it is clear that the inventory makes giving assignments to students on the social media team easier.  As I read, I saw that this exercise would also be important on a personal level.  So before I start, have you ever given this area – social media inventory – any thought?  Do you see an advantage to knowing your social media outlets and what they are used for?

I know that ultimately I would like to convince my fellow Board of Education members that the Board should have a social media presence.  I would love to see a 4square check-in for meetings and for votes.  I would like to see the Board use a blog as a way to communicate reasons for cuts or for keeping expenses to the public.  I would like to see the Board use Facebook to get information about our district to those in the district, the taxpayers.  The school district does have a web site but I think that some of these items would enhance the school web site.

So here is my social media inventory.

Blog- I have had this blog for over five years.  It started as a way to share scans of art with other artists around the world.  It has definitely progressed to more of a writing tool than an art tool.

Twitter – You can find me on Twitter at @NickiinNY.  I find Twitter to be an excellent source of news from all over the world.  I also use Twitter to promote my blog, my writing.  I use it to share other information that I find of interest.  It is a wonderful way to keep in touch with family as I follow some of my children who are no longer at home.

Facebook – While I like Facebook, I find it to be invasive.  I don’t like being on it for long as I dislike having the chat box pop up when I am unable to talk to friends.  I do use Facebook and find it a great marketing tool and communication method but it is not my favorite at the moment.

4Square – I use 4Square but will be the first to admit I frequently forget to check in.  As far as mobile web and smart phones go, I am in the dark ages.  I have the ability to use a smartphone but do not and do not see the need to be always in connection with everyone.

DailyMile – DailyMile.com is the Facebook of workout logging sites.  I log every workout I do – from snow shoveling to swimming to kick boxing to running – into DM.  I have met many great people who are on DM and hope to continue to meet those who have helped me along with encouragement and those who have inspired me through this format.

So, in closing, I am going to ask a couple of questions again.   Have you ever given this area – social media inventory – any thought?  Do you see an advantage to knowing your social media outlets and what they are used for?

Social Media

You would think I know a lot about social media.  I use Facebook, Delicious, Twitter, LinkedIn and a few other web sites on a regular basis.  My children think that I should probably use these less.  I don’t really worry about it as I am as likely to not use these as I am to use them.  I can live without them but prefer to know what is going on in my friends’ lives.

I use social media for work also.  Social media is defined as media “disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.”  These forms of media are up and coming ways to communicate and have a conversation with consumers if you are a business.

I tend to feel that you can always learn so I try to find courses and seminars on areas that interest me.  I went to a free seminar Time Warner Business Class offered in Binghamton back in October.  Matt Hames spoke on social media.  The seminar was well attended and I learned a lot, including a lot about Delicious which I had not been using much at that time.

I have spent the last two Friday afternoons in Ithaca at Alternatives FCU.  The six hours were two afternoons on social media.  One day concentrated on Facebook, the other on Twitter.  I learned a lot even though I use both on a daily basis.

In case you are interested in taking a class at Alternatives, you can check out Business Cents on their web site.  Below are some pictures from my experience there.

Do You Share What You Are Reading?

One of my favorite things to do is pass a book I love onto a friend to read.  I have done this many times, either with my own copy or by buying the friend his or her own copy of a favorite book.  I had never really thought about the fact that I do this electronically also.

I will continually post links on Facebook.  As I am reading an online article, I will think so and so would really like this information.  Frequently, I will find I want to send the article to more than one or two friends.  It is usually at that time that I will post the link to Facebook.

I also tweet about online articles I love.  It is often a RT (retweet) that will bring about a link in my Twitter feed.

My most recent thing is to really use my Delicious account to keep a list of what I am reading online.  I really learned I should use this more when I attended a Time Warner Cable Business Class presentation on social media and business.  Matt Hames has his Delicious URL on his business cards.

So, the question is do you share what you read with your friends, business colleagues?  Just real, in my hands things you read or your electronic reading also?

You can see what I am reading by friending me on Facebook, following me on Twitter at @NickiinNY, or visiting my Delicious account.

Valentine ATCs

I joined a Valentine ATC swap on Facebook.  It is the first swap on Facebook that I have joined.  I finished these off but haven’t scanned them yet.  What I am posting are camera pictures – which, for some reason, seem to be blurring today.  Not sure on that but will get a scan of one of the eight I made soon and add that to the post.

The first step was a background.  I decided to use a shaving cream background.  I used Stampin’ Up! Pretty in Pink and Passion Pink re-inkers for the color.

Then, I realized that the ATCs were rolling up so I had to flatten them out.  Out came the ironing board, a linen tea towel and the iron.  This also heat sets the ATCs.

Next was trying to figure out what to put on the ATCs.  I knew that I wanted to use some cupcake picks that I had received in a swap a year or so ago.  Did I want to stamp on the ATC?  I have these two foam stamps that are conversation hearts but they never leave a good image.  I tried them on two ATCs but didn’t like the images they were producing so went back to my original thought – die cuts.

I had borrowed my girlfriend’s Sizzix some time ago and did a mess of die cuts.  I used red primitive hearts on the ATCs and then put the cupcake picks.

Facebook, MySpace and the College Athlete

I am not a huge fan of Facebook or MySpace but I do have profiles on both.  I don’t sit and regularly check them as my teenagers do.  I do regularly check my teenagers’ profiles, though.  The problem is a lot of teenagers and early 20s kids don’t get that people other than your “friends” check your “life in cyberspace.”

The most recent problem is in Texas.  Mack Brown has removed a lineman from his team – not just for a game but for good.  The reason for Buck Burnette’s name no longer appearing on the Texas Longhorn roster – racial remarks towards President-elect Obama on his Facebook page.

When my youngest daughter left for Division I soccer pre-season a few years back, I remember her telling me that the coach had warned the girls at orientation to not post any pictures of under-age drinking on their MySpace or Facebook pages.  A lacrosse player had some pretty interesting drinking pics on one of her pages the year before.  She was no longer at the college or maybe it was that she was no longer playing lacrosse.  The point was, the coach had found out about this one player, along with teammates, breaking team rules via the internet.

Now, a scholarship and possibly – quite a few of Texas’s college players go on to play in the NFL – a future career have been ended.  First, the statement – which is no longer available along with the Facebook page – was ignorant.  It may or may not have been something the poster agreed with but just passing it on was not a smart move.  Second, I am pretty certain that the team was told that pages such as these would be checked.  Very few coaches check these things without telling the team first.

What do you think?  Did Mack Brown do what was right?  Did he overstep?  Do you think the NCAA should step in and make “no personal pages of any kind” a rule?
