Cornell Hockey

Last week, my daughter and I picked up a former classmate of hers from university and made what seems to be our annual trek to Cornell University. We live about 40 miles from Ithaca, New York and Cornell is an easy drive for a game or event, providing weather cooperates.

The reason for the trip this time was the Niagara University men’s ice hockey team was going to be playing Cornell. The 7 pm start made it easy to get her friend from college and get to Lynah Rink with time to spare. I will say I have never before had to park in the garage for a hockey, soccer or basketball game at Cornell but, even with the Thanksgiving break beginning, the parking lots around the rink were full.

Lynah and Cornell have some great hockey traditions. The banners that hang from the rafters tell the story of a program that wins and produces championships. Games are very hard to get tickets for, between the student section – which was full last week despite the impending break – and the season ticket holders. While there were seats in the area of the season ticket holders that looked empty, those seats most likely belonged to someone who was out of town for the holiday.

We saw some great hockey played by both teams. Niagara, who is not having a great season as far as wins, played very well and almost took the game to overtime. Unfortunately, a goal went in for Cornell with approximately 8 minutes left in the third period.

Enjoy the slideshow of sights from the game. Please realize the red you will see is mostly on the fans as I was looking to get good shots of Niagara players. Also realize that all photos were taken through glass. While our seats were practically on the ice, section O – where Cornell puts visiting fans – is not conducive to great photos of the entire ice.

March Madness – For Real

I am not sure if I am referring to the suddenly, totally white ground outside or the NCAA college basketball tournament.  Actually, I live in upstate NY.  I know I am referring to the tournament.

I was excited as I drove home from the CHA Tournament last weekend and listened to the NCAA tournament selection show on the radio.  My initial shock wore off as I heard them name Cornell (the local team this year) a 14 seed as I was sure they were a 16 seed or the play-in game.  After all, their bid was an automatic one for winning the Ivy League, a league that doesn’t even have a championship tournament.  I was even more shocked to hear the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champs Siena were a 13 seed.  Last year when Niagara University won the MAAC, they were forced to the play-in game which I didn’t think then, and don’t think now, they deserved.

Through three regions, the radio reception was excellent.  I still hadn’t heard the name West Virginia said.  I realize they didn’t win the Big East tournament.  I also realized that a lot of Big East teams had already been called into The Dance.  I was sure, though, that West Virginia was also going to play.  Finally, I heard it but barely.  We had driven past reception for this small ESPN radio station and I was straining to hear that WVU was a seven seed – not great but not bad either.

Now day one is over!  I watched some fantastic college basketball yesterday and last night.  I watch a 15-seeded Belmont almost beat 2 seed Duke, a team that has never lost in the first round.  I watched a 14-seeded Cornell get walked on by 3-seeded Stanford, a team whose players admitted that Cornell would hands down beat them in the grades category.  I wanted to watch WVU and Arizona go at it for several reasons.  Instead, I watch Notre Dame beat up on George Mason.  I did think, though, if George Mason stood a chance, it was due to the pre-game pep talk the coach gave.  CBS broadcast it and it was magnificent.

I ended the day with 12 correct picks out of 14 on my bracket.  Day two cannot possible be as good!!

PS.  Should you want to enjoy a little extra-curricular bracket talk, check out Yahoo! Sports writer Dan Wetzel who blogs live from a sports bar during the games today, which you should be able to find here.

Road Trip #1 for 2008

Tickets

Last Friday and Saturday brought the first road trip of the 2008 year.

My 20 year old daughter attends Niagara University. While university is on break, winter sports continue with little break. Some students don’t even get home for the holiday due to distance. She is a huge hockey fan, as am I, so we got tickets to the Purple Eagles’ games at Cornell which is less than 40 miles from home.

Friday’s trip was uneventful as driving goes. I have made the trip to Cornell many times for many different events so it is an easy drive. The hockey game was also uneventful. Niagara started their freshmen goalie and he took a huge beating. When they finally put in their junior goalie, the score was already 4-0. The final score was 6-0, Cornell.

Seats, on the other hand, were wonderful! To start with, Cornell’s ice rink seats as many as the local county arena where an AHL team plays. We were in front of a goal but at rinkside. We were in row 1.

Saturday’s travel was a different story. We were unsure, as the game was being televised, if we were going to go as here at home it was sleeting and hailing and freezing rain. Off we went anyway. We would have probably had an uneventful trip had it not been for dropping off her twin brother at his girlfriend’s house near Ithaca College. The roads – especially the side one she lives on – up on the hill were icy and there was a bit of slipping and sliding but no accidents.

The game Saturday was like two different teams were playing. With just about three minutes left in the game, the score was tied 3-3. My daughter and I were sure the game was heading for OT. Alas, this was not to happen but it was great hockey although another NU loss, 4-3.
