Winter Activities

I don’t know the last time I was excited about winter.  I love snow.  I love to ski and snowshoe – no not alpine skiing, cross country.  So, imagine my joy today to find the following blurb in the local paper.

Greenwood Park open for skiing, snow shoeing

Broome County’s Greenwood Park is opened for cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.

The trails are open until 4 p.m. daily. Equipment rentals are available at $3 per hour. The trail fee is $4 per day. Season passes are also available at the park in the Town of Nanticoke.
For more information, call the park at (607) 862-9933.

I am heading out to the garage to check the bindings on my snowshoes!

Holiday Stress Relief – Online

Do you like to play online games? I am not talking about gambling or anything like that. I am talking about mindless games. I find them a huge stress relief. Links below to two of my favorites.

Yes, I do these puzzles every day. I have a friend who always does them on the largest number of pieces. I just do whatever comes up when I click on the puzzle of the day.

Another Last Minute Gift

I know, I am the only one in the area, or within reading distance of my blog, that is not ready with all their gifts.  Well, here is another last minute gift you can make for someone on your list.

Handel’s Messiah

The Binghamton Downtown Singers performance of Handel’s Messiah on December 20th was wonderful.  The four soloists - Brenda Dawe, soprano; Hilerie Klein Rensi, alto; Todd Geer, tenor; and Todd Robinson, bass/baritone – along with the musicians from Local 630 presented a performance that rivals any of this season’s Messiah performances.

Under the artistic direction of Alan Crabb, the Downtown Singers did a melodious job on the chorus parts of Handel’s piece.  The dedication of this year’s presentation – to the 40th anniversary of man’s first visit to the moon December 24, 1968 – helped move the audience even more as it was explained prior to the beginning of the performance.  The trumpet solo pieces during Part III, which I believe was played by Frank Campos whom I heard earlier this year in a special performance with the Dallas Brass at Owego-Apalachin Middle school, added to the performance.

A special note on the musicians is that one of the bass players was an 18 year old Maine-Endwell High School senior.

My only regret of the evening was that I did not have my digital camera with me.  The entire ensemble stood for a picture prior to beginning.

Exercise and the Holidays

I am finding that it is harder and harder to work my workout into my life now that Christmas is less than a week away. Friday, I shoveled – TWICE – so counted that as my workout.

Yesterday, nothing between running kids around and concerts.  It was my choice to go to these events.  I still, though, need to run.

I just found the most amazing link in an email from SparkPeople.com – http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_plan_generator.asp.  It takes into consideration how much time you have – over or under 30 minutes – and your general fitness level – beginner or advanced.  It, then generates some workouts for you.  I would have liked to generate a list that had some ten minutes workouts but I did get a list of shorter workouts than a couple mile run.

Holiday Puzzle Day #4

Tuba Christmas

Tuba Christmas Binghamton

Tuba Christmas Binghamton

I just came from the mall.  I know, the Saturday before Christmas and only five days out, what was I thinking?  I was thinking Tuba Christmas!

Tuba Christmas as conceived in 1974 and takes place around the world.  This year there are over 200 locations taking place in Tuba Christmas.  Today, December 20th, there were 34 locations, including at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, New York.  At the Johnson City location (which I call Binghamton), there were 47 registered tuba and euphonium players making Christmas music outside the entrance to JCPenney’s.

I have also been to Tuba Christmas in Syracuse, New York.  No, I do not play a tuba or a euphonium.  I do, though, have two student musicians who have played the tuba.

If you get a chance, attend a Tuba Christmas near you!

The UB Response to David Letterman

Not that I stay up to watch David Letterman but he did some bashing of the University at Buffalo Bulls after they defeated Ball State in the MAC Championship game.  Here is the UB response – read by none other than my 21 year old son.
