Road Trip

Road Trip!  And with no medical emergency that I know of at the moment.

I am heading out about 5 am on this Friday for Niagara Falls for the weekend.  I am going to have dinner in Lewiston and go down to the Falls – maybe even at night.

If anyone has any wonderful ideas about what I should do while up there, let me know!

Georgia Graham – Kidney Transplant Hopeful

Georgia Graham is in need of a kidney transplant.  She is eligible for one in all ways but one – she needs to save $4000 prior to being made active on the transplant list at the Medical College of Georgia.

You may wonder why someone with insurance or even with Medicare needs to have money to have live-saving medical treatments.  In the case of transplant patients, the immune suppressing medications that are necessary for the rest of the patient’s life cost over $1800 a month.  The total amount, in the case of a patient on Medicare, is not covered by insurance.  The patient is left needed an additional $360 a month for the remainder of his or her life to just cover this particular part of the transplant procedure.

There are four things you can do to help Georgia Graham.

  1. You can pray that she will raise the money and meet any other requirements and receive the transplant she needs.
  2. You can go to Art Auctions for Charity – I designed the button on the blog – and bid on some of the wonderful donations that are being auctioned off to benefit Georgia’s transplant fund.
  3. You can become an organ and tissue donor.
  4. You can visit the blog that will explain Georgia’s situation.  If the story so moves you, please make a monetary donation.

Heirloom Tomatoes

Yes, I run the television while I read the local newspaper online each morning and go through my personal emails.  I even run it as I work each for “background” noise if I am not in the mood for music that particular day.

This morning The CBS Early Show interviewed Tim Stark.  Not a household name?  Not an author you recognize?  Me either but I just finished reading an excerpt from his newest book and am heading to a bookstore to pick up a copy this week.  Heirloom: Notes From an Accidental Tomato Farmer is going to be the read that goes with me for my weekend in Niagara Falls this weekend.

Expect a book review next week some time.  If the entire book is even closely as good as the four pages in the excerpt, I am going to love it.

Matchmaking in the 21st Century

I realize that there are television shows that show real live matchmakers that are working in the 21st century.  Unfortunately, most of us are not independently wealthy and cannot afford that cost with today’s ever higher spirally cost of living.

I resorted – guess I definitely need an attitude adjustment, eh? – to online personal sites.  I am not into answering a million questions so that the site can find my “perfect” match.  I want to post how I see myself – the drawback in this is that we do not always see ourselves as others see us – and let others respond to that image.

I have a profile on two different online sites.  I also meet plenty of people through my job and through my friends.  But the question always comes around to how do you screen those you may or may not want to meet.

At first, I thought age was a good determinent (is that even a word?).  I have a range that is my “ideal.”  Do we hold fast to our ideals?  If my age range is 37-50, do I respond to the 33 year old?  To the 59 year old?  If my ideal involves an educated man, do I respond the “some college” guy or the “high school” educated guy?

Do our preconceived ideas prevent us from finding happiness and meeting the right person?

Video Alert

I swore yesterday that I don’t watch videos often.  Seems that the new ones coming out have caught my attention more than normal.

I am a country fan.  I have never watched American Idol.  I have always loved the song “This One’s for the Girls” that Martina McBride sings.  This morning I listened to and watched Kellie Pickler’s newest video from her upcoming album/CD release – “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful.”  The lyrics remind me a lot of McBride’s “This One’s for the Girls” and the video is wonderful.

Eat Local

I am sure that eating local will be the topic of many blog posts for me.  I read a wonderful book about eating local by one of my favorite authors this summer.  This is not the only thing that has made me think that eating local is best.

As I sat watching the local news this morning, I was listening to information about a Growing Health 2008 conference/seminar/workshop that is coming in September.  The Rural Health Network of South Central NY is sponsoring this event at a local hotel on September 3.

The event is from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Regency in Binghamton.  It features local foods made by local chefs and caterers.  An event like this is a wonderful way to see and taste the difference between local foods and those that you buy in the grocery that come from Chile or even California.

You can read more about the event and register – yes, there is a cost – here.

GW Bush on the Georgian-Russian Conflict

Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.

The above is an excerpt from US President George W Bush’s comments on August 11th from the Rose Garden.  I would find the words very truthful and would be concerned if I were Russia except I would need to hear them from someone other than a leader who has invaded a sovereign – not neighboring – state and threatened its government – if you can call disposing the government totally threatening.

How can George W Bush stand in front of the country and make statements like this when he himself has started aggressions?  How can George W Bush feel he has the leadership position to try to save this situation from itself?  How can George W Bush feel he has the moral authority to criticize a country that is doing what it feels is in its own best interest?

You can read the entire comments – no questions, just comments – at the White House news release site.
