Another Political Disappointment

John Edwards is the latest in a long line of politicians that have lied to the American people.  Edwards has admitted lying about having an extramarital affair with a woman who ran a video production company.  The company, owned by Rielle Hunter, did produce four internet videos for Edwards’ One America PAC.  The PAC, in federal filings, paid over $100,000 to Hunter’s Midline Groove Productions.

Edwards says he denied the alleged affair previous as he did not love the woman.  The affair was first brought to media by The National Enquirer.  Edwards admits to the affair in an interview with ABC’s Nightline.

Hunter had a child in February of 2008.  Edwards denies that he is the father of the child and says he will not take a paternity test.

John Edwards is the most recent in a long line of politicians to disgrace the sacrament of marriage.  What he did that was even worse was lie to the American people.  On top of lying to the American people, he betrayed his wife while she was in the middle of battling cancer.  The man has lost all public trust in my eyes.  What about in yours?

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Have you ever thought about the statement – don’t eat anything you can’t pronounce?  I guess high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) doesn’t apply.  All words are easily pronounced.  My recent thoughts are don’t eat anything that takes multiple syllables to state what one or two will cover.  HFCS is basically a sugar and is not healthy.

Back in April, the Food and Drug Administration basically decided to pass on making an out and out statement about HFCS.   HFCS, according to the FDA, requires enzymes to break starch into glucose and to convert some of the glucose to fructose.  The process is not a natural breakdown.  It requires additives, in this case enzymes, to make HFCS.  By not acting in April, the labelling of foods that contain HFCS could not be considered natural under FDA regulations.

On July 3rd, most likely due to pressure from lobbying efforts from the Corn Refiner’s Association and Archer Daniels Midland, the FDA has basically sent a letter to the Corn Refiner’s Association reversing this decision and allowing HFCS to be considered “natural.”

What are your thoughts on this issue?  I know at least one major food manufacturer is polling/surveying consumers regarding HFCS and the term “natural” on labeling.  Do you consider HFCS natural?

Fuel Costs and Education

Back in July, I was reading the blog of one of the local newspaper’s education reporters, George Basler.  This particular blog post was regarding the effect high diesel fuel costs was having on school budgets and, subsequently, the education of our children.  About 12 days later, I was reading a Reuters article on Yahoo! that schools were eyeing a four day week as they did in response the 70s energy crisis.  I, of course, shared the Reuters story with the reporter and never gave it another thought.

My initial thoughts that school districts in my area are too opposed to rocking the boat held until this morning.  I routinely read the Niagara Gazette online as my daughter lives up there and is going to be student teaching this coming fall semester for seven weeks in the Niagara Falls City School District and seven weeks in the Niagara Wheatfield School District.  My attention was caught by an article written by Caitlin Murray (you can email Caitlin at murrayc@gnnewspaper.com).  While the article did not address regular bus runs, it did discuss changes in bus runs for before school activities – both for help on classwork that students are behind and extra-curricular activities (I believe – still trying to confirm this aspect).

As a parent, would you be willing to foot the bill – through a booster club or collection by a coach – for a lengthy bus trip for a sports team or a club?  Would you be willing, should your child need to be in school prior to normal bus arrival, to take your child to school?
