Adult Stem Cell Research

It was the name that drew me in, not the topic. The director of religious education at our church had made arrangements – as a teen topic (confirmation students get a choice of these to go to) – for a survivor of adult stem cell transplantation to come speak to the kids. The target audience was to be 15 to 17 year olds. Then, she opened it up to the entire parish. Still, I wasn’t going to spend another night out of the house if it wasn’t necessary.

Then, I opened the bulletin the day before the presentation and saw the name. Was it? It had to be. How many, in an area the size I live in, Carol Franzes could there be? I had worked with her son at my first job in high school. He and I had graduated together. Her daughter was one of my sister’s best friends. If there was any way possible, I was going to get to this talk.

Carol Franz has had two – yes, I said two – adult stem cell transplants. Both times the transplant has put her cancer into remission. She is walking proof that stem cells do wonderful things for people. She is also a walking lobbying force. She gives speeches, talks to presidents, tries to get on television shows. She explains everything in terms people – whatever her target audience is – understand. She is so much the mother of my friends I remember but more.

Please visit carolfranz.com and find out about adult stem cell transplantation. It could save your life or it could save the life of one you love.

Jean Shopping

This task probably ranks right up there with bathing suit shopping for women. Finding a new pair of jeans.

I use to find a pair I loved and when a new pair was needed, head back to said location to buy a new pair. I suddenly found that jeans change over time. I had to look elsewhere.

So, Saturday, as I waited for my 17 year old to get out of his guitar lesson, I went jean shopping. Had I found a pair I loved, I would have bought them on the spot. Did this happen? Not so much.

I am somewhere between 5’4″ and 5’6″ – probably closer to 5’6″ when I have on shoes. I don’t call that petite. I have been buying clothing lately at Lane Bryant. This is not going to last long as I am at the small end of their spectrum and, if you don’t get there the minute the truck unloads, you don’t get much choice.

Lane Bryant has just introduced a new sizing and style for their jeans. I figured this would be great. Well, not so much. My “body shape” indicates that I should wear a “red” jean. I hated the red jeans when I tried them on. I have sizable thighs from many years of bicycling. The red jeans were cut too narrowin the thigh.

The “yellow” jeans were suppose to be for some other body type. They evidently are vastly different as I dropped a whole size in them. They fit. I did not like the fit. They gave no shape to the back end at all. Maybe truly big women don’t want shape to their butts but heck, it looks funny flat – especially when I know it isn’t. On top of that, the waist was a tad bit too large and the length! Oh, my! I would not call myself petite. Yet, the length in the regular length jeans was too much for my inch and a half heels I had on. I would probably have had to have the jeans altered or wear four inch heels to have the length on these be okay.

So, jean shopping has again proved to be the bane of my existence. I will need to find a new place to shop for jeans.

College Football

My 17 year old son knows to not get between me and the TV when the Mountaineers are on TV. What he is slowly coming to realize is that any good college football game is a good reason to let Mom use the living room TV and to let her be.

I was just screaming at Oregon to fall on the damn ball. What is about kids thinking they can pick a bouncing oblong ball up – on the bounce, of course – and run with it. Just drop on that ball! And that was what I was yelling.

I spent early screaming at Navy to beat Notre Dame – blasphemy to many in my area so a good thing I was not at a bar doing it. Then, I spent time almost in prayer trying to help Cincinnati hold onto the lead against South Florida.

Am I the only person in the world like this?

A Great Fall Weekend

Autumn Tree

Yes, it finally feels like fall in upstate NY. So this weekend, I am going to watch my beloved Mountaineers play football – what else is a November weekend for. I am also going to spend some time menu planning.

I try to menu plan all year round. It doesn’t work but the winter sports season starts on Monday. This means that my oldest at home has to come home from school – some days as late as 5 pm and turn around and head to diving practice at 6:30 at a neighboring high school. It is essential that I have dinner ready by 5 and without some planning, I can’t do it.

An online friend has a great site! It is a blog called The Freezer Chicks. While these women do a lot of OAMC – once a month cooking, I just want their recipes. When looking today, there had a bunch of new ones up and I am stealing them.

I can’t wait to try Bottle Cap Chili (comes with a story as to how it got its name), Pasta with Pumpkin and Sausage (because we all know I am a pumpkin FANATIC), Lemon Glazed Chicken, or the ever popular Tater Tot Casserole. While these are new and who knows what the boys will think, I can mix them into a weekly plan with some standards for my house – Potato Soup, Barbeque Chicken – and the boys should be fine.

I will try – if the football game does not become too distracting – to post a menu later today.

November Background Technique

Purple Pearl

The November background technique for The Latest Trends in Mixed Media is to make backgrounds using colors from magazines.

Several years ago, I gave up subscribing to magazines. I was going to read at the library, have less waste/recycling. The environmentalist in me wanted to get rid of it all. Well, that didn’t last all that long. I would get offers for free magazines, via email, and would subscribe to those. I would still buy craft magazines. Now I am back to getting a few magazines that I actually pay for and the biggest one is Vogue. There is usually an article or two in the 400 plus pages but it is the ads, the inspiration that I get from it that makes it worth the money.

Above is a purple background done last night. Instead of texturizing it, I went over it with a sponge brush and pearlescent tinting gel for acrylics. It is not perfect but I love it.  Below are a blue and a pumpkin one I did.
