Mountaineer Football – Big East Champs

WV

Okay, so I am a Mountaineer fanatic! This is not something that is taken lightly or liked by many in the area of upstate NY I live in as we are less then 80 miles from Big East team Syracuse. I just could not put a real adjective in front of Syracuse this year.

As much as I love my Mountaineers, I have never professed the same love for the actual state of WV. I would like to go back and visit and will some day but I have never, until yesterday, wanted to live there.

I am safely ensconced in the recliner at my house, in front of what is termed the “big” tv as it is the largest one in the house. I have forewarned the kids that tonight’s dinner is leftovers and they are all more than capable of heating up their own as I am sitting down at 3:30-ish and watching WV and UConn. The game, of more significance than Coach Rod wants to let on, is being televised on ABC. For being in Syracuse territory, I have faired well this year in getting Mountaineer games on TV.

I am settled in with my Saranac winter sampler and a Winter Wassail whatever beer. I have some chips and dip. The game starts and I start acting like I am back in the student section. Only thing I am missing is my yellow – which I will find and wear before that bowl game. The broadcasters are being nice. They are talking National Championship – finally. They are also talking more about last night’s LSU loss and the upcoming Missouri-Kansas fiasco than the Mountaineers. No respect even when you are on the field.

The Mountaineers are up by a bit at half time so, rather than listen to more dripple about LSU and Missouri and Kansas, I turn to the Kentucky-Tennessee game. It goes into quadruple OT and I flip back and forth between it and the Mountaineers – watch the Vols and Wildcats when UConn has the ball. Suddenly, the fourth OT ends with a Vols victory and I go back to my Mountaineers full time.

I am watching and suddenly, as if the WVU-UConn game has no importance at all, ABC decides to go to the Georgia-Georgia Tech game. What is ESPN2 – where this game is suppose to be? The same flipping game! I am getting overridden for Georgia football that, because Tennessee took that game in four OTs, is useless also.

This just wouldn’t happen in WV. In WV, I would not be sitting in front of a TV that has Syracuse getting beat for the upteenth time, a TV that has Georgia-Georgia Tech on two channels. This is the northeast so at least I can understand the Syracuse game – winning or losing season. BUT – two teams from Georgia! Someone in sports programming needs to get a grip!

Finally, Some Respect

WVU SU Game

Yes! I admit – and probably always will – that I am a diehard Mountaineer fan. College football is one of my favorite sports and this year my Mountaineers are really doing well. Unfortunately, their doing well is not consistent. They have been ignored by almost all the major networks when talking about a national championship game. It gets annoying. Lose one game, early in the season, to a team that is now back to playing average and bam! You are not worthy.

So today, November 23, 2007 I went to rivals.com’s college football page. They were doing their look at who will play in what bowl game come the selection show on December 2. Well, guess what!?!?

WVU finally got some respect! They have the Mountaineers playing LSU for the national championship!

Yippee!

Black Friday

Cash Register

I swore I was done! I wasn’t going shopping on Black Friday. I wasn’t going to subject myself to the zoo that is shopping on this particular day.

I have done it in the past. When I had six young children who always wanted the “hot” toy for Christmas, it was the only way to afford it all. Now I am to the point where the sanity I save by spending a bit more later or earlier in the shopping season is worth it.

Things change, though. My son’s diving coach is leaving at the end of the month. The boys wanted to get him a drill set as he has always wanted one but never had one. My son, being the oldest in the group, is in charge of the surprise party and the gift. Off I went – ads to three different stores in hand – to get a cordless drill set.

I cringed as I went across the bridge and all the cars got off to the same shopping area. I cringed as, at ten of six in the morning, there was a line outside the Joann Fabrics store. I decided to not cringe as I was in the left lane going five miles over the speed limit and cars were flying by me on the right.

Luck was with me! I pulled into the parking lot to find a parking space that was the first on after the handicapped spaces. I walked into the store and practically into the display of drill sets. I walked right up to a register – no line at all. I was there and back in about 42 minutes – not bad considering on a good day it can easily take 15 minutes to get over there.

Happy Shopping!

Ho, Ho, Ho

The headline on the article said “Santas told to stop saying ho, ho, ho.” Upon further reading, it says that women would be offended.

Come to find out, this is not happening in the politically correct and also politically sensitive US. This is happening in Sydney, Australia. Santas in Sydney have been told not to say “ho, ho, ho” but use “ha, ha, ha” instead so as to not offend.

I find it offensive that someone thinks I am dense enough to think Santa going “ho, ho, ho” means he is calling myself or some other woman around him a whore. What is the world coming to? If you think Santa is calling you names when he says “ho, ho, ho,” then maybe you ought to look in the mirror before going out of the house. You probably should also stay away from places where there are small children.

My thoughts are this falls under politcally absurd, not politically correct.

Today is Veteran’s Day. I don’t know of a single parade in my area, though there may be one tomorrow. I am sure that the banks, the post office, the schools will claim a day off tomorrow. Will those who are serving to protect our way of life – the veterans of the future – get a day off to honor those who served before them? Will we remember those who fought, those who died, those who now live a tortured existence to help us have the freedoms and liberties we have?

Christmas Card Number 3

Christmas Cards – Part Two

I am seriously beginning to think I need a new scanner. These cards are not scanning as nice as they look.

This one is in copper. The stamp is the words joy, peace, love and hope in the form of a tree. It is one of my favorites. I think I have decided the forest green cardstock is too dark. I am going to need to adjust my thinking here.

Yes, it is cool outside. It has been for a few days. This looks like day three of not breaking 40F. Normal for where I live in November.

I am spending some time today making Christmas cards. I have bought some cards in recent years but for the most part I make my cards so the next few posts may have no words, just pics.

The card above is on forest green cardstock from Marco\’s Papers. The stamp is Anita\’s stamps which AC Moore carries. I stamped it in pearlescent jade Brilliance ink. I can honestly say I don\’t remember where the wording came from. It is an unmounted vertical saying. My mom found these cute little snowmen stickers so I have added that.

The inside is blank.

What’s Your Opinion of PDA in schools?

Okay, I am not talking about the electronic device. I am talking about public displays of affection.

When in high school – eons ago, I sat on a school district committee that developed a policy on PDA in the district where I attended school. It basically said what was and wasn’t okay at different age levels in school – hand holding, hugging, kissing, making out(it happens).

I hadn’t really given it much thought in ages until I got a phone call today from my 13 (yes, I said 13) year old son’s music teacher.

Evidently, he and his “girlfriend” were caught or seen by another student in the music teacher’s office kissing. No adult can confirm this and I haven’t had a chance yet to discuss it with him. I see many problems here – breaking the trust of the teacher, abusing a privilege of being allowed in the music area during lunch, the actual act.

So what is your opinion?
