Summer Food

I love food! I love to cook! I love to bake! I love to eat! But, most of all, I love summer food! Fall, winter, and spring bring about a lot of comfort food – those things your mother made and her mother before her and probably her mother before that, the heavy foods that need retooling to fit today’s lifestyles. Summer means fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh pestos, fresh everything.

A few weeks ago, I had an overabundance of swiss chard. This was a new food to me. When I use to think of swiss chard, I would think greens – spinach, collard greens. Now, I think pesto. I made the most tasty swiss chard pesto.

Last night, it was pulled pork sandwiches. I should probably say that yesterday as the pork shoulder was slowed cooked in a moist manner over the grill. I started the grill a bit after 10 a.m. and took the pork off about 3. I also made a fresh barbeque sauce for it. It was soooo yummy.

Tonight, as it is my youngest’s birthday, we are having what he wants for dinner. He has requested salmon. I will do my best to find the freshest Atlantic salmon – how can Pacific salmon be fresh in upstate NY? – and he will help cook it. I am thinking cedar plank grilled with a dill sauce but we will see.

Food!!! Yummy!

The Tour

While my 20 year old daughter may be talking about the local tour stop of CMT On Tour 2007, I am talking about L’Tour de France. Another of my huge fascinations with the country of France – other than its food and wine – is this endurance bicycle race.

I have biked for a long time and, in all honesty, not in a long time. I biked through my entire first pregnancy until, almost 8 months in, I fell off my bike and my OB/GYN thought it might be best if I didn’t bike for a while. My ex still bikes hundreds of miles a year and takes our youngest with him on many biking tours. This is one of my reasons for not biking much anymore. It is their thing and I think a good thing as it keeps him involved in the youngest’s life.

Anyway, my normal news habit has been replaced by Vs.’s coverage of L’Tour de France. I love the scenery and the biking. I am amazed by the shear athleticism of those who compete. I love the commentary from former participants and even by Al Trautwig.

Vive l’tour de France!

Summer Blogging

I swear there should be a word like blog that is for the times – in this particular case, summer – when you have tons going through your head and on in your life but don’t blog about any of it.

I haven’t put fingers to keys in a blogging manner in two weeks. In that time, the church bazaar has come and gone. The Fourth of July sogged through my area. Fireworks did get off but not on the fourth. I spent 12 hours volunteering at a soccer tournament. Many graduation parties have come and gone and I think most of my family has enjoyed many of them. My mother arrived from California. My first CSA installment came.

I am just thrilled that I have been so busy I can’t manage to type but will do better.
